With such a large variety of dates available, it can be quite hard to remember the different types and names. So for you connoisseurs out there, here's our guide to the most popular dates on offer during Ramadan.

Ajwa

Originating from the Saudi Arabian city of Medina and cultivated in limited quantities, the Ajwa date is celebrated as the ’Holy date’ and a revered variety associated with centuries-old Islamic faith.

It has a prune-like texture and black in colour with very fine wrinkled lines. These dates are delightfully soft and mildly sweet. Although, the Ajwa tends to be of the dry variety, it holds a fruity flavour profile.

Medjool

Also known as the California date, the Medjool is one of the worlds most popular date variety.

With a thick outer-skin and deep brown colour, it is easy to identify with its large elongated shape and pointed end. Plump, moist and luscious, it has a distinctive caramel taste with hints of vanilla flavour.

Safawi

Safawi dates are native to the Madinah region in Saudi Arabia and botanically known as Phoenix dactylifera. Classified as a semi-dry date, they are known for their soft, luscious texture, and refreshing sweetness.

Khudry

Originating in Egypt, the Khidri date is the most renowned Bateel variety. This date is large with a cylindrical and elongated shape, commonly amber to dark brown in colour with wrinkled flaky skin. It is delightfully soft and chewy with a sweet raisin-like flavour and caramel aftertaste.

Ambar

It's little wonder dates are recommended as the perfect fast breakers and considered the no.1 favourite on any dinner table during iftar.
